Today's #greatlakesfact: Built in 1837, the Soo Locks make it possible for 86 million tons of cargo to transit over 5,000 voyages per year on vessels from Lake Superior to the lower lakes Huron and Michigan.
Michigan became a state in 1837, however, the first Soo Lock was not established until 1855.
