Part 2, Day 51: Sunrise Sunday

This week's sunrise Sunday come from sailing across Lake Erie with the sun setting over the stern.

Part 2, Day 50: Rum Runner

Rumor has that this was formerly Al Capone's house on Grosse Isle in the Detroit River and was used for rum running during prohibition.

Part 2, Day 49: Tug Time

There is a little too much current to make the dock all by ourselves today, so we had a little help from a couple tugs.

Part 2, Day 48: Ashtabula Lighthouse

Sailing by the Ashtabula West Breakwater Light.

Part 2, Day 47: Secure the Lifeboat

How many guys does it take to get the lifeboat secured? It's a good thing we have drills, because it was time for some practice.

Part 2, Day 46: Twin Ships and Halfway There

I know, it's just another boat photo. Here we are overtaking our sister ship, the M/V Buffalo, in the narrow waterway of the Cuyahoga river. She lost her stern thruster and couldn't make it all the way up the river. Oh yeah, and today is day 46, which means I'm halfway done with my time for the summer!!

Part 2, Day 45: A/C and Bugs

This is what happens when the boat's A/C dies and you leave your port hole open so you can sleep at night.

Great view of the Ambassador Bridge while we fuel on a midnight trip through the Detroit River.

Part 2, Day 40: Thunderstorms on the Cuyahoga

A beautiful day to be standing on the bow to give distances to the captain as we make our way up the mighty Cuyahoga. I should have packed my rain pants.

Part 2, Day 39: Safety First

Abandon ship drills and CPR certification all in one day. #safetyfirst

Part 2, Day 38: Spotlight

Super powerful spotlights make middle of the night river navigation a little easier!  Here we are approaching a turn at Moon Island in the St. Mary's River.

Part 2, Day 37: Sunrise Sunday

A bit cloudy for the sunrise this morning, but it never gets old. This is looking over the stern headed across Lake Superior. Happy Father's Day! And, happy belated flag day.

Part 2, Day 36: Happy Father's Day!!

Yep, even Lois is surprised that you would take a photo as an elephant. Happy Father's Day, dad!! #bestdad #rexisanelephant

Part 2, Day 35: Cold Fingers

When it's cold out, my fingers go numb if I spend much time outside. It's the middle of June and our high today is 47!

Part 2, Day 34: Row, Row, Row the Boat

When you need to tie up and there is no dock, this is how you send guys over to handle the morning lines.

Part 2, Day 33: Ferry Crossing

Took this little ferry, the Drummond Islander IV, across the river to visit the village of DeTour while we were unloading today.

Part 2, Day 32: Steel Mill

This is where steel comes from at the Arcelor Mittal steel mill in Cleveland. We bring the iron ore from Minnesota and they combine that with some limestone in a blast furnace, melt it down, and create steel.

Part 2, Day 31: Reading Draft Marks

It seemed like a good time to take a "reading the draft marks" selfie while loading the boat with stone. Draft marks show how deep the vessel sits in the water and they are used to determine how much cargo is on board.

Oh yeah, and I've been on the boat for a whole month already!

Part 2, Day 30: Sunrise Sunday

Day 30: This week's Sunrise Sunday is actually a sunset from the St. Mary's River just up from Johnson's Point.

Part 2, Day 29: Safety Posters

Day 29: "Cadet - I think we spend a lot of money on these, so go find a place to hang all of them."

June's safety posters just arrived and I'm not sure why they have school kids on them.

Part 2, Day 28: Fuel time!

The fuel truck just arrived with 11,000 gallons of number 2 diesel and all of that fuel will last less than 2 days.

Part 2, Day 27: Maritime History

94 years ago today, the Merchant Marine Act of 1920, also known as the "Jones Act," was signed into law providing protection for mariners, the maritime industry, the waterborne economy, and our national defense.

Part 2, Day 25: Limestone

Today we are loading stone from the world's largest limestone quarry at Calcite in Rogers City, MI.

Part 2, Day 24: Remembering a Friend

Heaven gained a beautiful angel today and we lost a dear friend. Miss Carol was a blessing to me, my family, and everyone she met. Thinking of the Ellsworths today.

Part 2, Day 23: Sunrise Sunday

A beautiful start to the day over a calm Lake Superior!

Part 2, Day 22: Cadets in Command

Watch out - cadets are driving all the boats in the river today. Met Brett Cox on the American Courage while we were both calling the shots on the St. Clair river today.
